It is time to get jazzy with our top 5 Denver jazz clubs.

Overview:

If you are looking for a fun night out on the town with friends or a hot date, consider hitting up these Denver jazz clubs.

Do you like jazz? For me, jazz isn’t just about music; it’s a deeply rooted cultural experience that transcends time and connects communities.

My name is Toni Tresca, and I’m the editor of Bucket List Community News and a freelance arts & culture reporter who has spent many nights immersed in the improvisational world of Denver jazz clubs. The city’s rich musical heritage, once epitomized by its “Harlem of the West” in the Five Points neighborhood, is alive and well, and this guide is my tribute to that enduring spirit.

In compiling this list, I looked for venues that not only showcase outstanding talent but also create a welcoming environment for everyone, from long-time jazz fans to curious newcomers. In a city with an impressive music scene, the Denver jazz clubs I’ve rounded up for you are among the city’s best all-around spots for live music.

Whether you are looking for a great date night, a chic location for a business event or simply a place to listen to live music, these are the jazz venues in the Mile High City that hit the right notes.

Appaloosa Grill

Located in the heart of Denver’s 16th Street Mall, Appaloosa Grill—lovingly known as “The Horse”—has been a cherished destination for live music since 2001.

Originally conceived by former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, the Grill’s transformation over the years has made it a gathering place for locals who crave excellent food and top-notch live performances. The 2007 renovation was a turning point, as it enhanced the stage, lighting and sound system, transforming it into a serious spot to perform jazz.

A typical evening at the Appaloosa attracts a lively crowd of all ages.

Appaloosa’s relaxed atmosphere, daily happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. and emphasis on scratch-made comfort foods make it a favorite hangout spot for those who love Denver jazz clubs. Music at Appaloosa Grill is anything but predictable. With a lineup that spans genres and frequently highlights Denver’s homegrown talent, there’s always something fresh and exciting on offer.

Jazz lovers will appreciate the intimate stage that brings them up close and personal with musicians. Combined with a welcoming staff and a community-oriented vibe, Appaloosa Grill is a place where you can relax, savor and let the music transport you.

Dazzle Denver

Dazzle has long been a staple of Denver’s jazz scene, and with its new location at the Denver Arts Complex, it’s better than ever.

Established in 1997, Dazzle has become a beacon for both local and international talent. Its current location has three distinct listening spaces: the main stage to the right as you enter, the El Chapultepec Piano Lounge and the bar to the left, all with a cool contemporary flair that combine to create a multifaceted live music experience.

Guests can enjoy excellent food and drink while soaking in performances, offering a full sensory experience that elevates every show. Happy hour is served Monday to Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. on its patio and inside the lounge.

Purnell Steen and the Five Points Ambassadors regularly perform at Dazzle Denver.

While purchasing a ticket to one of Dazzle’s shows is an unforgettable experience, it is also an excellent place to visit before or after a performance at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. I like going there afterward to listen to some live music and avoid competing with crowds streaming out of the infamous parking garage.

You don’t need a ticket to hang out in the bar and piano lounge, where you can relax with a drink while soaking in the sounds of the main stage. This flexibility makes Dazzle a perfect place to keep the night alive, whether you’re in the mood for a high-energy performance or a laid-back wind-down.

Whether you have a ticket to the main stage or are simply taking in the sounds from the other end of the venue, Dazzle Denver is always alive with great jazz music.

The venue’s dedication to creating unforgettable musical experiences resonates with artists and audiences alike, making it a must-visit for any jazz enthusiast. Whether you’re there to sip on craft cocktails in the lounge or immerse yourself in a ticketed show in the main listening room, Dazzle consistently delivers a blend of high-caliber music, hospitality and a touch of magic that leaves lasting memories.

Dazzle Denver, 1080 14th Street, Denver. Hours: Monday to Wednesday from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday from 3 to 10:30 p.m. Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Learn more at www.dazzledenver.com.

Herb’s

Tucked into the bustling streets of LoDo, Herb’s has been a Denver institution since 1933. What started as a simple tavern has evolved into one of the city’s best-kept secrets for live music, with a focus on gritty, high-energy performances that often cross genre boundaries.

Owned and run by musicians, Herb’s exudes a raw authenticity that’s hard to find elsewhere. On any given night, you might catch a mix of seasoned jazz performers, emerging talents, or genre-bending collaborations.

Orignally called Herb’s Hideout, this venue has been around since 1933.

The unpretentious atmosphere makes it a go-to spot for both serious music fans and those looking for relaxed Denver jazz clubs. Herb’s is known for keeping things simple: great drinks, great music, and a relaxed setting. This no-frills approach ensures that the focus remains on the performers and the visceral experience they create.

Herb’s is known for its unpretentious approach to jazz.

Herb’s brings a gritty, authentic vibe to the modern jazz scene, making it a true “hideout” from the more polished bars and clubs nearby. You’ll find some of the city’s hottest bands lighting up the intimate stage, and it’s all about kicking back, sipping a strong cocktail and feeling the electric pulse of live music.

Herb’s Hideout, 2057 Larimer Street, Denver. Monday to Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Learn more at www.herbsbar.com.

Nocturne

Situated in the trendy RiNo District, it opened its doors in 2015 and quickly established itself as a haven for live jazz.

It’s a curated experience where fine dining and exceptional live music meet. Though unassuming from the outside, making you feel as if you are stepping off Larmier into a sleazy club, once inside, you realize it is much larger than it first appeared.

The club’s red brick walls and gently draped black curtains onstage create a sleek performance space, while the acoustically designed space elevates each performance. Furthermore, because the stage is slightly elevated, you can sit at one of the tables surrounding the stage, at the bar or on the balcony on the second level and still have a great view.

This multilevel jazz venue has no bad seats.

Nocturne’s Artist in Residency program sets it apart from other venues by fostering a deep connection between performers and audiences. Musicians engage in multi-week residencies, which explore specific genres, pay homage to legendary artists, or showcase original compositions, resulting in a curated musical journey for attendees.

Dining at Nocturne is just as memorable as the music. The prix fixe menu, carefully paired with the night’s performances, elevates the experience beyond a standard concert. Every detail, from the beautifully seasonal dishes, which currently include curry gnocchi, duck confit, and pan seared swordfish for the main course, to the warm and attentive service, contributes to a refined and inviting atmosphere.

Nocturne frequently serves dinner and entertainment to RiNo residents.

This is undoubtedly the most expensive option on the list; dinner and a show start at $98, but there are walk-up options starting at $10 for students, families, and youth, as well as $26-$36 for bar seating for those interested in hearing some jazz. Despite the high prices, Nocturne’s dedication to maintaining an unparalleled level of quality makes it a venue worth splurging on from time to time.

Nocturne, between Larimer and Walnut on 27th, 1330 27th Street, Denver. Hours: Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Learn more at nocturnejazz.com.

Spangalang specializes in craft beer and tight tunes.

Patrons can enjoy fresh craft beer while being serenaded by live jazz, often in a laid-back, intimate setting. The brewery’s commitment to craft and creativity extends beyond its beer offerings. It’s a community gathering place that brings people together to appreciate both art and flavor.

From its jazz-inspired decor to its welcoming taproom, Spangalang Brewery invites you to slow down, savor a pint and let the music sweep you away. It’s a testament to how music and culture continue to thrive in the ever-changing landscape of Denver jazz clubs.
