Bucket List Community News has been mentoring students and recent graduates from CU Boulder, MSU Denver and DU for a long time now, but recently we’ve started working with high school students, primarily from the Denver Public Schools.
Over the summer we worked with Genesis from Abraham Lincoln High, and she wrote a story for us about the rebranding of her school. She was our first high school student, and we were immediately impressed with how she held her own with the older students.

This semester we have Jesse and Naomi from South High, and they are working with our business development team to introduce community journalism to students, faculty and parents. They have created flyers and surveys to take the pulse of their community when it comes to news and have joined us as brand ambassadors at events we participate in.
And just last week I had the chance to speak in person to students in Autumn Hartley’s class at Prairie View High School. I wanted to leave them with inspiration and something to hold onto following our chat, so I brought some bling, an Emmy award, to show them what’s possible if they bring their passion and hard work to something they believe in.

The students prepared thoughtful questions and gave me a tour of their very well equipped production studio in the three year old CTE building. It was funded by an Adams County bond and showed the impact that investment in education can provide.
That’s the case for community journalism as well. We need the community investing in us so we can keep doing this work to share stories that matter and mentor the next generation of journalists like the young people in Ms. Hartley’s class.
We are entering the third week of our #newsCOneeds fundraising campaign and we’re asking you to support Bucket List and our efforts to bring you free hyperlocal neighborly news and make sure aspiring journalists and journalism entrepreneurs have the skills they need to serve the community. We’re asking you to invest in local news.

Your contributions will be matched by Colorado Media Project and the Lenfest Institute so they will have TRIPLE IMPACT. And if we get the most unique contributors in our November rally, we can earn another $2500 in incentives. If 100 of you give $5 (or more) it will be a slam dunk. This will help Bucket List continue to do this work for you, our neighbors, and for the next generation of journalists. Thanks for supporting community news. Please contribute today.

Warmest Regards,
Vicky Collins
