Local Artist Honors State’s Agriculture in Stock Show Mural

A 35-foot-long mural depicting Colorado’s abundant harvest has been unveiled at the National Western Stock Show. It is part of the state’s 150th anniversary celebrations and aims to “inspire curiosity” about what comes next in Colorado history, according to local artist Detour. Read more about the mural’s creation in a story written by Alex Murphy and Beau Baker and originally published by KUNC and COLab.
BRT Slowly Moves Down East Colfax

Since breaking ground in October 2024, the Bus Rapid Transit project along East Colfax has been gradually progressing down the corridors and is now about 37% complete. The ongoing construction has had a significant impact on local businesses, limiting parking and decreasing foot traffic, forcing them to accept compromises in the hopes that this plan will improve their access to the community. Journalist Perry Guidry provides updates on the project, its effects on the community and how the East Colfax BRT project may (someday) improve daily lives.

Stuff We Noticed
Denver City Council Announces Plan to Limit ICE Face Coverings. Two Denver City Council members have proposed a bill banning federal law enforcement agents from wearing face coverings. Councilmember Flor Alvidrez, who proposed the bill, stated that ICE officers “acted more cruelly” when wearing face coverings and that the proposal aimed to reduce fear and increase trust in officers. Although no date has been set for the bill’s introduction, the Department of Homeland Security announced this week that it will not comply with the proposal.
State Lawmakers Grapple With $850 Million Budget Shortfall. The Colorado legislature begins the year with lawmakers attempting to address the state’s $850 million deficit. This means that legislators will be forced to make significant cuts, and there is no funding for new programs. Medicare, transgender care for prisoners, food stamps, and cuts to unemployment benefits are all being considered to close the gap.
Famous Colorado Nature Photographer Featured on 150 Year Stamp. John Fielder, a Colorado landscape photographer, will have his work featured on a US Postal Service stamp. The stamp celebrates Colorado’s 150th anniversary as a state by featuring a photograph of Jagged Mountain in the San Juan Mountain Range in southwestern Colorado. The United States Postal Service will also hold a “first-day-of-issue” showing on January 24th at the History Colorado Center, showcasing more of Fielder’s work and the state’s breathtaking views.
