Hi, Bucket Listers! The dazzling Aurora Borealis wasn’t the only bright spot on the Front Range this week: Bucket List Community News won an award! Denver INC, which oversees the residential neighborhood organizations in the city, gave us the Neighborhood Star award at its 50th anniversary celebration for our work serving the community with free hyperlocal neighborly news and mentoring the next generation of journalists. We are extremely proud of this honor and of all of you who help us continue to do this work. Here’s a testimonial from Keith Meyer, president of Denver INC:

As we wrap up the second week of our #newsCOneeds fundraising campaign, we ask that you please read the story by our publisher, Vicky Collins, and consider how local news makes a difference in your life. We bring you important stories and amplify issues that you care about, but we can’t do it without your help. Please contribute today to keep us going.

The Colorado skies put on an extraordinary show this week, with not just one but two nights of the Northern Lights on display Nov. 11 and 12. In amazing photos, our reporters captured images of the celestial show across the state. If you missed both nights, read our article to see what the sky looked like and why this natural phenomenon happens.

Anythink Library in Brighton has added a new mural to its walls that highlights Deaf culture through its creative work. The collaboration with KissFist Mural Fest, an organization dedicated to fostering Deaf artists, had children and community members excited for the big reveal. Read more about the opening in a story by our Diego Simental, as well as why it’s called KissFist and how the organization plans to expand its mission throughout the state.

Author Claire Costello holds a copy of her book, “Who Stole Carl’s Carrot?!”

When local children’s book writer Claire Costello unexpectedly passed away in June, her family was left with dozens of copies of her book, “Who Stole Carl’s Carrot?!” Inspired by Costello’s passion for giving back, her family is honoring her memory by donating her books across the Denver Metro. In my story, learn about Costello’s family’s generous donation to BookGive and how they are dealing with their grief by giving back to the community.

Lawmakers Fight with Governor Over Budget. As the state prepares for a $850 million shortfall in the coming fiscal year, Governor Jared Polis has proposed balancing the budget by reducing Medicaid and privatizing Pinnacol Assurance. Despite acknowledging the need for cuts, lawmakers from both parties criticized Polis’ proposal to the Joint Budget Committee on Wednesday. This proposal serves as a starting point for the committee tasked with developing and passing the budget through the legislative process.

Colfax Music Festival Debuts This Weekend. The inaugural Colfax Carouself Punk Fest kicks off Saturday evening at the Lion’s Lair, Squire Lounge and Tight End Bar. The festival, created by Tom Dobb and Ryan Heller, two local punk musicians, will feature eighteen local bands across three venues. The event aims to showcase Denver talent while also bringing more business to venues along Colfax struggling due to BRT construction. Tickets for one venue are $15, while an all-access ticket is $30.

Gen X and Millennials Go All In on Botox. Wrinkle-smoothing injections are now almost as common as haircuts in Colorado. According to a Qsight analysis, 40% of Gen X, 31% of Millennials, 26% of Boomers and 2% of Gen Z or younger in Colorado use Botox to reduce the appearance of aging. According to experts, the reason for the increase is primarily due to people seeking preventive treatment to avoid developing wrinkles.

That’s it for now, Bucket Listers. This week, we jumped from $825 to $2,700 in our #newsCOneeds fundraising campaign, which is great, but we still have a long way to go to reach our $15,000 goal. Your contributions will have TRIPLE IMPACT thanks to matching grants from the Colorado Media Project and the Lenfest Institute! If we can collect the most individual donations from participating newsrooms by the end of the month, we will receive an additional $2,500. Please, Bucket Listers, step up and support community journalism. Thank you for your support, and have a wonderful weekend!

Warmest Regards,
Kathryn Cronin
