Being an entrepreneur is tough. Publishing Bucket List Community Café has been the most challenging thing I’ve done, and I’ve done some very difficult work in my decades long career in television and journalism. I could not do this without a dog at my feet. They’ve had many names over the years: Buddy, Charlie, Rosie, Sydney, Ca$h and now Daphne. Four legged partners who lift my mood and remind me not to stress so much.

This doesn’t diminish the contribution of every member of our team, our multimedia journalists, our managers, our editor, my supportive partner and advisors. They all do heavy lifting but it’s my dog who distracts me with snores and silliness and is my soft place to land during a hard day. Our team takes care of jobs we need to do, and my dog takes care of me.  I’m sure all of you with animals know how it is.

That’s why all this week in our Christmas in July campaign we are asking you to make contributions in honor of the pets in your lives. They are our friends and neighbors, and Bucket List tells their stories too. We’ve told you about Xtreme Dogs at the National Western, Goldens in Golden, the Cinco de Mayo chihuahua races, how acupuncture is helping pets and a Colorado law making it easier for renters to afford their cats and dogs. We even did a podcast with our friend Bernadette Pflug of Black Paw Dog Training.

As many of you know, we said goodbye to our friend and canine correspondent, Ca$h, on Valentine’s Day. How appropriate that she would cross the rainbow bridge on a day devoted to love. She was a gorgeous, fluffy ball of compassion who helped our family through our darkest days. A shelter dog who became our shelter from the storm. As the clouds lifted, we got Daphne, who is Bucket List’s new canine companion, and almost 6 months old. A handful to be sure, but picking up the pieces of our heart.

This week, please contribute in honor of Ca$h and all the animals in our lives who help us stay in the moment, interrupt our zoom calls, remind us to get up from our desks, take us on walks then break the ice with folks we meet along the way. Of course, we want you to support us because we do quality journalism, mentor the next generation of journalists and build community by sharing our stories.  But also contribute to honor our animal neighbors and best friends. They inspire and sustain us at Bucket List so we can continue to inform and serve you.

It’s easy to contribute. Click here or go to our website. You can make a one time, annual, or preferably a recurring monthly contribution. If you want, send us a photo of your dog or cat and tell us their story and we’ll post a shout-out during the week. Remember the first $2000 in our campaign is being matched by our friends, Ginny Jordan and John & Mark Warren of William Blair, who also appreciate the companionship of an animal. Thanks for supporting the work we do at Bucket List and the pets who help us get the job done.

Warmest Regards,
Vicky Collins
