It’s pumpkin spice season, Bucket Listers! It’s time to get out those sweaters and fall decorations. There are so many fun things you can do this time of year in Colorado, but what better way to bring in the new season than to go admire the fall foliage around the state?
We’ve collected the top five places that you should check out this fall for a great view.
1.) Eldorado Canyon State Park
Explore the park and appreciate the fall leaves without going too far from home at Eldorado Canyon State Park. Peak foliage season is usually mid-October since it’s at a lower elevation than other parks.
Once you’re done taking in the scenery, head down to Boulder and explore Chautauqua Park or grab some lunch on Pearl Street Mall!
2.) Phantom Canyon Road
Take a drive through Phantom Canyon Road in southern Colorado to see the see the vibrant fall colors without even getting out of your car. You’ll drive through old towns, cattle herds, rock formations and historic tunnels.
The best time to head over there would be from late September to mid-October. It is an unpaved road where you’ll encounter narrow tunnels and steep drop-offs, but it’s worth the drive! There are plenty of rest stops and picnic areas so you can stop and admire the view.
3.) Kenosha and Guanella Pass
You could combine the Kenosha and Guanella Pass for one awesome day trip! These scenic byways are a great place to see the bright gold aspens in late September. These are pretty popular spots, so be prepared for it to get busy if you’re driving up on a weekend.
Be sure to bring a camera because you’ll want to capture the beauty of the colorful mountains!
4.) Rifle Falls State Park
Head West, past Glenwood Springs, to find Rifle Falls State Park, a lesser-known location to admire the autumn colors. The park is famous for its three waterfalls that completely transform in the fall when the foliage changes.
There are three hiking trails of different lengths that will give you a view of the waterfalls along East Rifle Creek and other activities at the park. Peak timing usually ranges from mid-September through early October.
5.) Lake City
For a quieter fall getaway, visit Lake City, a historic mountain town for a spectacular view of the fall foliage. The fall foliage typically peaks in mid-September, making it a perfect time to explore the area.
You can take in the scenery on nearby hikes, go on a fishing trip, or just enjoy a drive through the mountains. Popular trails nearby are Crystal Lake, Waterdog Lake and Devil’s Creek. Looking for a little more adventure? Take Engineer Pass (County Road 20) toward the ghost town of Capitol City!
