Hello Bucket List readers! First, I want to introduce myself as your new Friday newsletter reporter. I’m Kathryn Cronin, a senior at CU Boulder this fall, and I’m very excited to join the Bucket List team. As part of my internship, I’ll be bringing this weekly newsletter to your screens to keep you informed on what our team is up to.

Bucket List is all about our readers, and we love delivering hyperlocal news to you. Our team relies on your support to keep it going and is asking you to help us reach our $5,000 goal in our ongoing Back to School Fundraiser that runs through August 31, so we can continue to report the news that matters to you. We appreciate any support and would love to see your contribution to the team. Now, onto the news.

Kathryn Cronin.

Over the weekend, Bucket List was thrilled to learn that our team had been celebrated with multiple awards by the Colorado Press Association. Our team of journalists took home 10 awards, including many first-place honors, in the statewide contest. We also won the editorial excellence award for the second time in two years. Bucket List publisher Vicky Collins shares more about the event and provides links to all our journalists’ award-winning stories in a piece she wrote for us this week.

August is quickly coming to an end, meaning the school season has started, and schools in Denver, like Trevista at Horace Mann, are looking for new ways to improve their students’ experience. Our reporter, Dominick Zangara, talked to school staff, community members and the parents of Trevista students about prioritizing wellness and mental health in the area. Check out the full piece for more about how Sunnyside hopes to be a leader in mental health.

La Vista Motel, located on East Colfax Avenue, is set to soft open in October. Photo by Dylan Barbee.

La Vista Motel, a popular Denver stop in the 1950s, is attempting to revamp its reputation. Developer Nathan Beal has taken on the project to transform the Motel into a safe place to stay on East Colfax. Through new additions of a cafe and bar that keep its classic mid-century look, La Vista seeks to overcome its “checkered past.” Our Dylan Barbee got to talk one-on-one with the developer Beal to get to the bottom of how he plans to revive the building.

Grand opening of Town Pump Provisions.

The new Town Pump Provisions, which features the 11th Little Man Ice Cream location, has had no trouble attracting the local community. With the option of picking up a sandwich, aspirin or ice cream all in one location, the crowds were hungry for what they were serving up. Khaleigh Reed offers the inside scoop on Cherry Creek’s new business concept in her article this week.

Denver fires city employees. 169 city workers were laid off on Monday, and the City of Denver announced that it would eliminate 665 open positions while finding new funding for 92 jobs. While this was less than the possible hundreds the city originally anticipated, many longtime workers were affected. The mass layoffs will save the city $100 million and lessen its roughly $250 million budget shortfall. Mayor Mike Johnston argues these cuts are necessary for Denver’s spending to keep up with the changing economy and says “we won’t need” any more layoffs this year.

KDVR takes over 9News. Nexstar Media Group, the parent company of Denver’s Fox affiliate television station KDVR, has acquired TEGNA, Inc., the parent company of longtime market leader 9NEWS, for $6.2 billion. The merger will create the country’s largest local broadcasting company by combining 265 television stations from 44 states and Washington, D.C. This deal is expected to close in late 2026. What this means for the journalists at 9News, including Kyle Clark, is unknown at this time, but the future doesn’t seem good for the trusted local news outlet.

Prepare for a “cold, snowy” winter in Denver. The Farmers’ Almanac, which has predicted forecasts for the past 200 years, reports intense winter conditions for the northern United States. While Farmers’ Almanac isn’t 100 percent accurate, even if it only claims to be 80 percent accurate, it’s a likely bet that Denver will be snowy in the coming months.

Thanks for reading! While on the website reading these stories, don’t forget to take a look at our Back to School Fundraiser. Please consider contributing so our talented journalists can keep reporting on your local news. We would love to keep doing our part, so help us out by doing yours. Have a lovely weekend, Bucket Listers. We’ll see you next Friday!

Warmest Regards,
Kathryn Cronin
