Good morning, Bucket Listers! We have some really exciting news to share. Our multimedia journalists won a whopping 14 awards at the 2024 Colorado Press Association convention last week. It was fantastic to see members of our team, surrounded by parents, grandparents and friends, receive their first recognition.

Jackie Ramirez won with a story on successes with Denver’s basic income pilot. “Good coverage of a program that helps change people’s lives,” judges said. “The interview with one of the program’s participants puts a face and meaning to the story beyond just reporting what the program does.”
Maddie Lindsay won two awards for stories about the One River North building and the anxiety DACA students were feeling because of the uncertainty surrounding the program. “Very timely topic and extremely well written educational story,” judges said for the latter.
And London Lyle, who won four awards, has a new fan for her article about the Taylor Swift concert. “The column brings the reader along for the ride,” judges said. “Highly conversational and descriptive, blending personal observation and reporting. An engaging piece.”
Join us in congratulating these journalists and Daianee Galindo, Jonathan Peter, Ryland Scholes, Elizabeth Pond and also Mimi Herrick for her podcasts with Anne Trujillo and Brianna Titone. We couldn’t be prouder of our talented team. Now, bring on the weekly news!

Pedestrian Safety Advocates Talk Transit
In a city whose metro area has grown by nearly 500,000 people in the last 10 years, Denverites might expect to see better sidewalk infrastructure and public transit systems, but that’s not always the case. In the latest Bucket List Community News podcast, our Ryland Scholes interviews two advocates for pedestrian and bike safety in Denver: David Chen from the Denver Bicycle Lobby and Alejandra Castañeda from Pedestrian Dignity. Their conversation focuses on how to ensure that cars, bikes and pedestrians can coexist safely on the road.

Local Event Encourages Women To Enter The Sports Industry
Women currently account for only about 28% of those working in spectator sports. Enter Girls in the Game, a new free event hosted by CBS Colorado, that aims to inspire young women to pursue a career in sports. Olivia Gryson attended the inaugural event on Saturday, August 17, inside Hamilton Gymnasium on the Denver University Campus, to speak with organizers and learn about their plans to increase women’s participation in the sports industry.

Swingin’ Denver Dances the Night Away
Kenny Nelson founded Swingin’ Denver to bring the community together through swing dancing. One of the highlights each year is Swingin’ Under the Stars which takes place on Saturdays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. This is an initiative with Little Man Ice Cream that begins with a dance lesson before turning attendees loose. Our Sadie Gonzales recently attended a session where she got her groove on and spoke with the instructors about how to get the most out of the experience.

Stuff We Noticed
Denver City Councilmember Kevin Flynn of District 2 published a fiery opinion piece in the Denver Gazette on August 28 voicing his strong opposition to a November ballot measure that would close Superior Farms, an employee-owned slaughterhouse in North Denver that provides halal lamb for the Muslim community and others. The group behind the ballot measure, Pro-Animal Future, argues that slaughterhouses are inhumane “to workers, animals and the surrounding communities they pollute.” Flynn, along with the Colorado Livestock Association, is opposed to the ban, claiming that it unfairly targets a sustainable business and urges voters to reject it.
If you are one of the estimated 444,500 passengers who will pass through the Denver International Airport (DIA) over the Labor Day weekend, you will have three new dining options to try. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday, August 27, to commemorate the opening of El Chingon, Mizu Sushi-Izakaya and Aviano Coffee in Concourse B. All three restaurants have local ties and bring new Mexican, Japanese and beverage options to the third busiest airport in the United States
Larry David, the co-creator of “Seinfeld,” and retired football player Peyton Manning announced this week that they will collaborate for an event on Friday, September 20, at the Paramount Theatre in Denver. However, unless you have a few hundred dollars, you may want to curb your enthusiasm. As X user Cody Ulm wrote on the platform, “I wanted to go see the Larry David and Peyton Manning chat, but the cheapest tickets were $400.” Although this is a bit of an exaggeration, as Ticketmaster currently lists tickets for $365, others agree with Cody—these tickets are not priced “pretty pretty pretty good.”
Finally, Bucket List will launch our Bucket List Top 5 guide on September 8. Each member of our team has compiled a list of five accessible, affordable activities that cater to a wide range of interests. Our newsletter subscribers will see it first on Sunday mornings, and then we will post it on our website the following week. Please share it with your neighbors and friends, and if you know anyone who might be interested in sponsoring it, please let us know so that we can contact them. In the meantime, if you have any story suggestions, please contact Vicky or Toni. If you enjoy what we are doing, please consider contributing. We hope you have a relaxing Labor Day weekend, and we will see you next week, Bucket Listers!
Warmest Regards,
Toni Tresca
