Overview:

Our monthly radio show covers DIA's Future, Boulder's South Recreation Center, microgrants and more.

July’s episode of the Bucket List Community News Radio Show takes listeners all across Colorado’s Front Range, from the fierce battle to preserve Boulder’s South Recreation Center to the community impact of Denver INC’s Weaver Award Microgrants. Plus, Denver International Airport’s CEO, Phil Washington, joins us for a conversation reflecting on his tenure leading the airport and sharing his thoughts on DEN’s future prior to his retirement in August.

Originally aired on Thursday, July 2, this episode was hosted by Toni Tresca, editor of Bucket List Community News.

To start things off, Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington joins the show to reflect on his five years at the helm of the nation’s third busiest airport. During the conversation, Washington touches on his biggest accomplishments, such as expanding the airport’s reach to Asian and African destinations, along with drastically increasing the airport’s yearly visitors. Washington also speculates on which direction the airport will head in the years to come, talking about the possibility of DIA operating on a fully independent power grid from the surrounding cities. Dave LaPorte will take on the role of Interim CEO following Washington’s retirement.

From there, the show turns its focus to Boulder, as Bucket List reporter Emily Doskow breaks down the current battle to preserve the city’s South Recreation Center. As city leaders weigh how to fund major repairs for Boulder’s three aging rec centers and long-term recreation needs, many residents in South Boulder are fighting to preserve their decades-old facility, arguing it remains an essential community hub that doesn’t need replacement.

After that, Keith Meyer from the Denver Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation (AKA Denver INC) joins the show to discuss the Weaver Awards program. Through a partnership with the Aspen Institute and DU, Denver INC has launched this new initiative that offers $2,500 microgrants to local individuals and grassroots groups focused on building relationships and connections across our communities. Meyer discusses how the grants can help further empower residents who are already making a difference across Denver.

To cap things off, Bucket List’s Anika Siethoff joins the show to lay out the Fourth of July events happening across the Denver Metro Area. From historic parades to rock concerts, arts festivals and drone shows, Anika’s got you covered if you’re looking for fun across the city during this holiday weekend.

The next episode of the Bucket List Community News radio show airs Thursday, August 6, at 3 p.m. on KGNU. You can listen to all previous episodes by clicking here. If you like our program, consider a contribution to keep us on the air.
