Hi Bucket Listers! As we make the turn into August, attention is turning to Broncos football. Die-hard fans have already gobbled up all the tickets for training camp, which kicks off today, so you’ll have to wait until the preseason begins on August 9 to catch the team. The regular season starts on September 7 against the Tennessee Titans at Empower Field. For more fun activities, check out our website’s calendar and open our Tuesday events newsletter. Now let’s turn to the news.

Denver Inc. President Keith Meyer addresses the crowd at a meeting about the NWSL stadium.

What happens when a $70 million women’s sports stadium project meets a neighborhood still recovering from years of underinvestment? That was the question at the heart of last week’s packed town hall. Cassis Tingley reported on the scene, where franchise leaders discussed construction timelines for the new NWSL stadium that will be home to the Denver Summit FC, community benefits and why they believe this project has the potential to be a national model if completed successfully.

People talk at The 528 Table, hosted by Longer Tables on July 26, 2024 in Denver’s Civic Center Park.

A mile long table is coming to the Auraria Campus—yes, literally. Sadie Gonzales sat down with the organizers behind the Mile Long Table, a record-setting communal meal happening this Saturday. Learn how this massive event aims to spark intimate conversations, honor displaced Aurarians and bring over 5,000 people together.

The local car scene is shifting into high gear, and PJ Guidry has been there to ride shotgun. From high-performance Audis to hand-built Frankensteins, local auto enthusiasts are turning heads at weekend meetups across the city. In this lively feature, meet the drivers, tuners and shop owners bringing fresh energy and community spirit to Colorado’s fastest-growing hobby.

Bye Bye Bridge.  Gov. Jared Polis is pulling the plug on his own controversial plan for a pedestrian bridge near the State Capitol. After public backlash, including from Historic Denver and veterans’ groups, Polis said he’ll “chain himself to the plaza” before letting the project move forward. An informal poll that closed Monday night showed 93% of respondents opposed the idea, and Polis is now looking for other ways to celebrate Colorado’s upcoming 150th birthday.

Colorado’s Infrastructure is Below Average. The American Society of Civil Engineers just gave Colorado’s infrastructure a C- grade—again. While we saw slight improvements in wastewater and dam safety, roads, schools and levees all scored poorly. The report notes that rapid population growth and tough weather conditions have outpaced recent funding boosts. On the bright side, the state still outperforms the national average on bridge conditions.

License Plate Readers Spark Privacy Debate. Denver’s 111 automated license plate readers are helping police recover stolen vehicles, but at what cost? Critics say the Flock cameras could be misused for immigration enforcement and call it a violation of civil liberties. While the city council declined to renew the vendor’s contract, the cameras remain active as the city weighs its next steps.

Cyclist Killed at Dangerous Intersection. The bicyclist killed in a hit-and-run at 38th and Tejon on Monday evening has been identified. He is 21 year old Salih Koc, a work and travel student from Turkey who had been here just over a month.  The driver, 28 year old Jonathan Jarabek, has been arrested.  A protected bike lane was proposed in 2021 for the intersection but was never built. Advocates say the tragedy underscores long-standing frustrations with Denver’s slow pace on bike safety infrastructure.
